The Key to Better Work Life Balance When You Work in Tech

In today’s modern society everyone seems to have long work hours and very little work life balance. This is true for many industries but can be seen more commonly in some fields than others. One of the types of roles that tends to work long hours and may also be on call often, is anyone is the tech industry. Whether you work in software, IT, mechanics, engineering, or another science related position, you are probably one of the only people at your company that can do your specific job, this often leads to little vacation time and a constant need for your support. Does this sound familiar? If so, you may need to take a step back and assess your current mental and physical health, because studies have shown that a lack of work life balance can lead to high stress and poor diet, among other unhealthy symptoms, behaviors, and habits. If you keep this up it could be dangerous. It does not have to be difficult to create more balance in your life, all it takes is creating a few new habits and changing your routine a small amount while adopting a different attitude about some things.

Be Clear with Your Superior

One of the first steps to having a better work life balance is being clear with your boss about your priorities. This may be a tricky conversation and perhaps even force you to look for a new job, however if you are serious about making a change, it is important that you fill in whoever may be affected by these changes before going ahead and making them. The conversation does not necessarily have to be that you want to leave the office at a certain time each day, it can include a variety of parameters that may help you achieve more balance in your lifestyle. For example, you can say that you will work as long as you need to during the week, but that you will not be available for calls or emails on weekends. Another option might be to say that you will be available seven days a week, but only between set hours are you able to be reached. There can always be some compromised involved.

Create a Healthy Routine that is Fun

People lead a busy lifestyle tend to like things structured and scheduled. If that is the case with you, it is important to schedule in your fun time. Either way it has to be something that you enjoy and it should really be done on a regular basis. This can also be a good way to enforce the boundaries you set at work.
